The Influence of Bob Marleys Absent, White Father :: Bob Marley Essays

â€Å"My fadda was a guy yunno, from England here, yunno? Him was like†¦like you can read it yunno, it’s one o’dem slave stories: white guy get the black woman and breed her. He’s a English guy†¦I t’ink. Cos me see him one time yunno. My mother? My Mother African.† (Bob Marley, 1978) The psychological aftermath of being an abandoned child of a biracial marriage was something that heavily influenced reggae superstar Bob Marley for his entire career. Many of Marley’s most loyal fans and the vast majority of reggae enthusiasts are unaware that he was, indeed, born to a white father, Captain Norval Marely, and a black mother, Cedella Booker. Bob Marley grew up angry with his father who he felt had mistreated him and his mother. Marley was also partially ashamed of his white heritage. This childhood mentality of resentment and embarrassment sculpted Marley’s youth and eventually influenced the ideals and work of his musical genius for his entire career. The sentiment of abandonment and the lack of a father figure forced Bob Marley to look to other means, like the ideals of Rastafarianism, for direction, comfort, and a sense of belonging. The strong allegiance to black culture that resulted from the absence of his white father also partially attribut ed to Marley’s unwaveringly sense of Pan-Africanism. The imperfections and almost total absence of Bob Marley’s Caucasian father, Captain Norval Marley, had a profound psychological influence on the great reggae icon. The effects of racial issues on human nature and thought are highly debated and viewed quite sensitively by many. Often, people even find their feelings and observations difficult to discuss with regard to the subject matter. With this in mind, it needs to be stated that Bob Marley was not a bigot in any way. In reality, Marley was a â€Å"missionary for a form of personal and collective identity he called â€Å"Rasta† a word that both signified a history of racial oppression, and pointed to a definition of community beyond the language of race† (Stephens 149). It should also be stated that Marley was a member of the early movement of Rastas who were rooted in Garvey’s Black Nationalism, and in an ancient tradition of â€Å"Africanized† Christianity known as Ethiopianism (Stephens 149). Early Rastas adopted the ideals of Kenyan anti-colonial rebels, their call to action being: â€Å"Death to the white oppressor† (Stephens 149).

Htm100 – Assignment 1 – Careers in Lodging and Food and Beverage Industries

Careers in Lodging and Food and Beverage Industries Name School HTM 100 Professor Name February 3, 2013 Careers in Lodging and Food and Beverage Industries The hospitality industry is a very lucrative and rewarding career choice. Choosing a career in this field is not for the faint at heart. A career in this industry requires an individual that is ambitious, self-motivated, and has a charismatic personality. However, the hard work comes with many personal and financial rewards. Hospitality covers all careers that can come underneath the lodging, restaurants, event planning, theme parks, transportation, and tourism. However, this paper will go in depth explaining the role of general management, growth of employment, and human resource practices that should be used when hiring within the lodging and food and beverage industries. The management careers that are available in the lodging and the food and beverage industries are general manager, director of food and beverage, executive hous ekeeper, director of security, executive chef and quite a few more. The hospitality industry is a several billion dollar a year business, and having excellent management and support staff is critical to the success of the business.Management is a very important key factor within the lodging and the food and beverage industries. This is why having an excellent General Manager is so critical to the success of the many organizations that exist within the lodging and food and beverage industry. A General Manager or (GM) has broad, overall responsibility for a business or organization. A General Manager has the power to hire, fire, or promote employees. A manager may be responsible for one functional area, however the General Manager is responsible for all areas.A General Manager is responsible for higher level planning than a manager. A General Manager is often responsible for the overall strategic planning and direction of the company or organization and leaves the day-to-day managemen t of the various functions to the managers (F. John Reh, 2013). In the lodging industry the General Manager or (GM) is responsible for making sure all facets of the hotel or lodging structure is running properly. They must provide owners with a reasonable return on investment, keep guest satisfied and returning, and keep employees happy. This may seem easy, but because there are so many interpersonal transactions and because hotels are open every day, all day, the complexities of operating become challenge that the general manager must face and overcome. The GM not only focuses on leading and operating the hotel departments but also on aspects of the infrastructure, from room atmosphere to security (Walker, 2013). If a restaurant is inside of a hotel, then the food and beverage division is overseen by the general manager of the hotel. In this scenario the person that runs the food and beverage division is referred to as the director of food and beverage. In this case, the director rep orts to the general manager of the hotel. However, if there is a free standing restaurant, bar, or lounge; there is a general manager who is responsible for the entire operations of that establishment. If the restaurant, bar, or lounge is a freestanding establishment, the owner will sometimes double as the general manager and do the job on their own without hiring someone.Sometimes owners will hire an individual to fill the job as General Manager, especially if they have invested in a restaurant and do not have any experience in how to run it properly. If the food and beverage establishment is located within a hotel even though the general manager is responsible for all aspects of the hotel, as stated earlier, the GM depends on the director of food and beverages to run this division. The director of food and beverage has many job duties and is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the following departments: * Kitchen/Catering/Banquet * Restaurants/Room Service/Min ibars Lounges/Bars/Stewarding When taking all of the above areas in consideration, it could be stated that it could be harder to oversee the food and beverage division within hotel than in a freestanding restaurant. This is because a freestanding restaurant does not have to oversee room service and minibars that are located in the guest rooms. When reviewing all of the departments that a general manager is responsible for within the lodging and the food and beverage industries, it would make one wonder what is the overall growth rate within this industry. As far as restaurants are concerned, growth is looking strong for this year.According to the National Restaurant Association, many private sector jobs were added in the fourth quarter of 2012. â€Å"Two days after a Commerce Department release that showed real gross domestic product (GDP) contracted for the first time in more than three years, the latest jobs report boosted economic spirits with stronger than expected private sect or hiring in the fourth quarter of 2012. Despite the mixed signals, the underlying fundamentals of the economy remain positive, which points toward an improving business environment in 2013 (National Restaurant Association, 2013).The restaurant industry is not the only one that has a pleasant future. The hotel industry also seems to have a bright and optimistic future. Look at what the Bureau of Labor Statistics had to say. â€Å"The vast majority of workers in the hospitality industry — more than eight out of 10 in 2004 — were employed in service and administrative support  positions. Employment of hotel, motel and resort desk clerks is expected to grow faster than some other occupations in the industry. Hotels also employ many workers in part-time and seasonal jobs. Hospitality industry fear not!Despite an unemployment rate that’s higher than the national average, hotel jobs and hospitality jobs are actually on the rise. Projected to grow 17. 7% through 201 4, the most popular hotel jobs and hospitality jobs continue to be waiters and waitresses. Oh, and the employment rate for hospitality jobs is at an all-time high as well† (AOL JOBS, 2013). Now that it has been established that the lodging and food and beverage industries have made it through the recession and is a strong and growing industry; what does a general manager do to make sure they are hiring the best possible employees? Many may think that anyone can work in the hospitality industry, but nothing is further from the truth. The hospitality industry requires an individual that is hard working, flexible, and a warm, confident personality. These are the following attributes a general manager should look for when hiring a potential employee. * Communication – when interviewing look for eye contact and well-formed answers to interview questions. * Multi-Tasking – look for examples from their past work indicate an ability to multi-task by asking two or three pr onged questions that relate to slightly different topics. Attitude – look for a candidate that smiles and provides answers to questions that hint at optimism. * Flexibility – look for open-minded candidates who can explain to you why flexibility is important. The above qualities are exactly what an employee needs to possess in order to be an asset to the hiring organization. In conclusion, the lodging and food and beverage industries are very challenging but lucrative industries. Both industries have made it through the recession and now that people are starting to travel and eat out more it is more imperative than ever that this industry has quality employees to keep their guest happy and the industry moving forward. One of the areas of importance is that organizations in this industry hire general managers that are able to keep their business successful by doing the most important part of hospitality which is keeping their guest happy. It is also imperative that the g eneral managers make the proper hiring choices when filling positions within their organization. If all facets of the business are met, this can ensure the length and prosperity of the lodging and food and beverage industries. Failures in Design and Security Principles - 1347 Words

The most common threat to a companys information assets mainly come from human error, inappropriate disclosures, and sheer carelessness on the part of the companys employees. Hackers who do intentionally tamper with the companys network often do so because they are tempted by assets they know are poorly protected. Weak security policies present the image that a company does not truly value its assets, which in turn attracts the petty thief and curiosity seeker. Therefore, the preventive element of any network security system should include a strong and enforceable security policy for its employees to follow, re-enforced by a form of technical protection (Control Data, 1999). The only time the system alarm is when a critical error is detected. During normal operations, the technicians monitor Vital Suites display, looking for unusual events. These events can come as a serious of major alarms that occur only a one specific time of day or a continuous string of minor alarms. These events can indicate subtle attempts at compromising the network. In the case of such events, the traffic is examined closer and any needed corrective action is taken at that time. Data collected by Vital Suite can also be used to expose points of vulnerability by looking for unused ports or poorly configured network devices. When a point of vulnerability is found, the technicians make any necessary system corrections. The true key to successful violation detection is not found with the sophistication of the tools used but in the skill of the people using them. Therefore the final element in establishing an effective detection system is creating a training program that ensures that the people monitoring the system know how to properly use the tools and how to best discover any attempt at attacking the network. Recovery No matter how well developed a network security system is, there still comes a time when the system is defeated. For this reason, a recovery plan must be established. Similarities and Differences Between the Conflicts in...

During the 1900’s two deadly wars were raging on, the civil war in Sierra Leone and the genocide in Rwanda. The civil war in Sierra Leone began in March 1991, while the genocide began in 1994. Combined these two wars killed upward of 1,050,000 people, and affected the lives of all the people that lived there. The conflicts in Sierra Leone and Rwanda occurred for different major reasons, but many little aspects were similar. Politics and Ethnicity were the two main conflicts, but despite the different moments rebellions and the murder of innocent people occurred in both places. Politics was the factor that caused the Sierra Leone Civil War, while ethnicity and years of oppression fueled the genocide in Rwanda. These two causes are†¦show more content†¦The young boys were already without families due to the war, and their fellow soldiers would become their new family. The leaders of the armies would convince the children that the enemy was who had killed their family, which may have influenced their decisions not to flee. Along with the recruitment of the child soldiers these wars caused the deaths of many innocent people. In Rwanda despite the â€Å"hatred† between the two groups many people were not apart of any army. Despite that fact many were still killed and children were killed too, not child soldiers, young babies and children because of who their parents were. This was the same in Sierra Leone, villages were burned and families were killed even though they had no part in the political destruction in the country. They armies would go around burning the villages and towns down, forcing people to run for their lives, and killing others. Many villages and places in these countries were burned, ransacked, and destroyed due to the conflict. The wars heavily altered both these countries political systems, economy, and development. Both these conflicts were detrimental to Sierra Leone and Rwanda, in similar ways. The murder of innocent children affects the future generations of the country. Essay about Production Report on Thriller Film - 1549 Words

Production Report on Thriller Film For my production unit, I chose Brief 1: Thriller Film. This is due to my interest in them and the confidence I have in producing my own, which I found from GCSE television advertising work and in my ability to deconstruct existing films. In order to fulfil my brief successfully, I had to perform several areas of research, which will make the product look like products in real life and show that I know and can use the appropriate codes and conventions. I also watched a non-Hollywood film, the French film La Haine. Comparing the two different sorts of films, emphasised the codes and conventions that I needed to use for my classic Hollywood film.†¦show more content†¦This was done by putting key objects or people in the vanishing point and a lot of use of doors- to show the many possibilities. Another method of research was to find an audiences opinion, by creating and distributing a questionnaire. The questions were based on thriller film viewing and possibilities for a new thriller film. I asked ten people to fill it in and collated the results in order to find out what film viewers want from a film. I found out that people enjoy thriller films because they are very different to other film genres and they enjoy the suspense, that psychological thriller films are popular, that completely original narratives are preferred, which are realistic. That a fast editing pace and limited action and violence is important in a thriller film. A film on child abduction, as this is a particularly topical subject in the news at the moment, with a male and female hero/ine team would be popular. This means that my idea for the narrative of the film would be popular if it was made and released and that the film would have lots of suspense but little action or violence. This gives me a firm idea of what my film must contain in order to fulfil the genre and be popular. Project Principles Development Lifecycle

Question: Discuss about the Project Principles for Development Lifecycle. Answer: Introduction: The risk management is an important factor for the success of a project. There are different risk management practice that should be followed during the development lifecycle of a project (Frigo Anderson, 2012). The risk management contains the different operation like risk analysis, identification, prioritizing, mitigation, planning, monitoring, etc. An example of risk management failure is the Bank of America which decided to charge extra money for gaining access to their funds. The bank has not applied an risk management for taking such an important decision and thus caused dumping of the new idea. An example off risk management success is Papa John International Inc that demonstrated that risk management can play a crucial role in the success of an organization. They used different risk analytical tool like risk pyramid, risk appetite survey, risk heat map and immediately responded to the risk that arose during their project management (Frigo Anderson, 2012). There are different project management models like Agile, Waterfall, CPM (Critical path method), CCPM (Critical chain project management), Scrum, six sigma, etc. The different project management models are used for getting different outcomes from the model. The Scrum model is used for the determination of the prioritized task while the six sigma model is used for the reduction of waste from the project (Andrat Jaswal, 2015). The CCPM and the CPM also differs from each other, the CCPM is used for analyzing the use of the resources while the CPM is used to analyze the potential issues related with the resources. The effort became a success because they created the risk management plan was created aligning it with the business needs. Leading indicators are used for the prevention of risk and monitor the risk. The company accepted that all risk cannot be mitigated and they build contingency plan to deal with the risk. The three different standards PMBOK, PRINCE 2 and ISO is compared and contrasted with each other and it is found that the standards are used for different purpose. The ISO 21500 is used for the overall framework of a developed project and it act as a common language to act as a bridge between the various methods used for the development of the project (Axelos.com, 2016). The PMBOK is used as a national standard and it consists of the local framework condition and provides guidance to the internal and external quality control. It also provides internal and external quality assurance for the project developed (Frigo Anderson, 2012). In case of PRINCE2, focus is given on the maximum number of actual outputs. The Prince 2 is a methodology that defines the standards and the effect of its application on the project. In case of Prince 2, the internal result consists of the quality control and the external result consists of quality assurance. The internal Prince 2 process is concerned with Project assurance and the external process is concerned with quality assurance. Global project management is applied in an organization for emphasizing the companys needs and reorganizing the cultural allegation for working with the employees with diversified origin. For the global project management the company need to choose right certification for project management that is internationally established (Rui et al., 2016). The use of this standardization help the organization in different ways like reduces the cost because the organization does not need to develop the project from the scratch. The organization also find it useful because it is easier for the company to find skilled resources around the world who have specialization in working in the specified field and improve their international communication field. The implementation of the standardization in the current business process also simplifies the trade process. References (2016).Axelos.com. Interaction Essays - Qualitative Research, Anthropology,

Structural-Functional Theory is society works together as a whole through many smaller areas. Several groupings such as culture, customs and traditions combine while at the same time are separate. Every country on earth has varying culture, customs and traditions but unite under one banner, the country. All must stay within self- imposed restraints to keep functional. Too much to the left or right will impose an imbalance that could have a negative impact on their surroundings and eventually have a direct impact on society itself. In this election year the structural-functional approach concerning the political system will be tested to the breaking point. There are several key components to include special interest groups, all of the political parties and the specific branches of government. Special interest groups are supporting whatever individual the feel will put the most money in their pockets and support their way of thinking. With the exception of the Democratic Party, the inc umbent is the nominee, everyone thinks they are the front runner and none have the same outlook on how the nation should be run. One of the most brilliant and wise presidents that has served, Thomas Jefferson, clearly believed too much control by the Government would ruin a nation. Unless something happens in the near future I believe that you are seeing the coming extinction of the Structural-functional theory as it relates to this nation. Social-Conflict Theory is a Marxist-based theory which argues that individuals and groups within society have differing amounts of material and non-material resources and that the more powerful groups use their power in order to exploit groups with less power. Considering this, isn?t this way portion of our society function? Some do not want to associate their actions with this theory but what else could it be. One way you have forces exploiting society is economics. Economics equal money. If you have the money you can pretty much achieve any goal you wish over the poorer classes of individuals. An individual told be one time to remember the Golden Rule; he who has the gold rules. Without a doubt this statement would fall within this theory. Symbolic Interaction Theory is one of the major frameworks of sociological theory. It relies on the symbolic meaning that people develop and rely upon in the process of social interaction. Symbolic Interaction Theory traces its origins to Max Weber. My take on this theory is we are programed to act to certain interactions. While simply driving a car we know to stop when we see a stop sign or a red light. This theory is ingrained into us from birth. As a child we know and come to learn when certain things present their self we will perform a certain action and hope we achieve our goal. Social-Conflict Theory and politics, it is well understood in this country that in order to run for a high office or to gain political ground you need to have considerable funding. In stating this, the arena of politics is left to a select few. It doesn?t matter at what level of politics that you are discussing unless you have the support you will not gain your goal. The higher levels you attempt to gain the more intense the interference of special interest groups and individuals become. Everyone has a vote, but does it really matter. You may have an individual running for an office that really has the hearts of the people in mind and really wants to help but doesn?t have the available avenues or support to get them to their goal. On the other hand you have an individual who have their old agenda and is working only to get into office supported by special interest groups. Just by the day-to-day exposure on the available Medias people get brainwashed into accepting this individuals pr ograms. Whereas the individual who doesn?t have the backing is limited to how his efforts get put out to society. Again, individuals and groups within society having more material and non-material resources use their power in order to exploit groups with less power. The Qualitative research method is what I have chosen to take another view on politics. Two methods would be the use of interviews
